Our Story

Alabama Internal Medicine has deep roots in the Birmingham area. Since its founding, the practice has focused on providing comprehensive healthcare for adults while giving patients a local medical practice they can turn to for both routine healthcare and ongoing medical needs.

At the center of that story is Dr. Steven J. Kulback. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1978 and has built a career in internal medicine ever since. His experience extends beyond routine clinical practice: Dr. Kulback has also served as a principal investigator in clinical research, including research registered with the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s ClinicalTrials.gov.

That combination of longevity, clinical experience and research involvement gives him a perspective developed over decades of caring for adults with a wide range of healthcare needs.

Before Medicine

From the Crimson Tide to a Career in Medicine

Dr. Kulback’s Alabama story began long before Alabama Internal Medicine. Before becoming a physician, Steven Kulback played football for the University of Alabama under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.

He was part of Alabama’s 1973 National Championship team and lettered for the Crimson Tide in both 1973 and 1974, graduating cum laude before beginning the next chapter of his career. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force, completing his internal medicine residency during those years and receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1985.

The discipline, commitment and connection to Alabama that shaped those early years remain part of the story behind Alabama Internal Medicine today.

Adult Primary Care With a Whole-Patient Perspective

Internal medicine is about much more than treating a symptom. An internist is trained to care for adults with healthcare needs that can involve multiple conditions, medications and body systems, which makes the relationship between a patient and an experienced physician especially important.

We focus on understanding the whole patient: current symptoms, medical history, medications, laboratory findings, risk factors, lifestyle and existing health conditions. Individual treatment recommendations depend on each patient’s health history, symptoms, examination and medical needs.

Experience Is the Thing Technology Cannot Replace

Medicine has changed dramatically since Dr. Kulback began his career in 1978. Diagnostic technology has evolved, treatment guidelines have changed, and new medications have transformed the management of many chronic conditions.

What experience provides is perspective. Dr. Kulback has cared for patients through generations of change in healthcare, and that depth matters in internal medicine, where symptoms and health conditions do not always exist independently of one another.

Our philosophy

Our philosophy is not simply to address what is happening today.

We want to help patients understand their health, identify potential concerns, manage existing medical conditions and make informed decisions about their ongoing care.
